Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint

Several measures can be taken that further reduce your overall environmental ‘footprint’ called ‘offsetting’ other carbon emissions (perhaps from transport use) through actions that have a positive impact elsewhere in the global carbon cycle. For example, the planting of trees increases the natural environment’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen in its place (a process known as carbon sequestration).

Other carbon offset schemes invest in carbon reduction projects, particularly in developing countries where outside investment can really make a difference. Finally, it can be possible to tighten the carbon reduction targets on fossil-fuel power stations & large industrial businesses by reducing the quantity of emissions allowances that are required to support their activities.

In all cases, it is important to ensure that all carbon offset schemes do actually make a difference to global carbon emissions. The key requirement is that a scheme in some way makes a carbon reduction investment that would not otherwise occur i.e. there is no point paying to support a project that is happening anyway.

BizzEnergy will continue to develop its offer of carbon offsets – watch this space for news of forthcoming options to enable you to further reduce your environmental impact. Find out how BizzEnergy’s link with the Trees for Life scheme can help offset your carbon emissions.
